Passengers travelling to the USA continue to be hit by flight delays and cancellations after the severe snow storm which hit the East Coast yesterday forced airlines to ground at least 885 flights.

As America deals with another deluge of snow and freezing conditions, travellers are advised to check with their airline as to whether flights will go ahead.

British Airways has cancelled three of today's flights from London Heathrow to New York's John F. Kennedy International airport, although flights to Philadelphia and Washington DC appear to be scheduled to depart as normal.

Virgin Atlantic has cancelled more than 30 internal flights from JFK, and the airline warns passengers to check flight status before heading to the airport as some flights from the UK may still be cancelled.

The storm hit Washington DC first before moving north to Philadelphia, New York and Boston. This is the second spell of heavy snowfall experienced by the Eastern Seaboard since the start of the year.

Thousands of passengers were stranded in New York, with 718 flight cancellations at La Guardia Airport, 592 at John F.class= Kennedy and 461 at Newark.

The snow ceased late on Tuesday night after dumping over 11 inches on parts of the city, A state of emergency was declared in New York and Long Island, plus Westchester and Rockland counties.

The storm stretched across 1,000 miles of north-eastern America between Kentucky and Massachusetts, hitting particularly hard along the heavily populated Interstate 95 corridor between Philadelphia and Boston, creating chaos for JetBlack millions of motorists yesterday evening.

The bleak conditions were blamed on a ‘polar vortex' in which freezing Arctic air is being drawn south from the polar regions.

While the winter blast is expected to be gone by Thursday, meteorologists predict it will be followed by another blast of cold air pushing down from Canada on Friday or Saturday.

Tuesday's swirling snowstorm broke some previous snowfall records.

The National Weather Service reported a record daily maximum snowfall of 6.1 inches at New York's LaGuardia airport, breaking the old record of 4.8 set in 2001, and in Central Park a record 7.6 inches fell, breaking 2001's record of 6 inches.
