Concord will forever be regarded as one of gaming's biggest-ever failures. A reported toxic work environment saw the game fail to attract any kind of audience , leading to it closing down after two weeks and its director leaving Firewalk Studios .

With Marvel Rivals soon to enter a similar space in the gaming landscape, I got to chat with the game's director, Guangyun Chen, at this year's Tokyo Game Show . During our conversation, we spoke about everything, from the Marvel IP to the comparisons to Concord.

Marvel Rivals Won't Be Another Concord

When I asked Chen whether he had any concerns about what happened with Concord happening to his game, he simply responded, "No. We're confident with our game."

"The ideology behind our design is to make it fun for people, for the players," Chen added, citing the Marvel brand as something that "allows us to have unique gameplay and really stands us out from the shooting game perspective."

Chen once again confirmed that NetEase games has full access to Marvel's vast library of characters, including those in the comics, the MCU, and past video games, and he feels this alone is enough to attract players. "We want to show is our specialty. We have the Marvel IP. We are under the Marvel storyline. We have over 85 years of Marvel history, and we have countless heroes and maps," he said.

NetEase's confidence in Marvel Rivals doesn't seem misplaced either. According to Chen, a recent player survey released after one of the game's betas "received like 100,000 pieces of feedback from players." The survey reportedly determined that 70 percent of players would recommend the game to a friend, scoring an average of 4.5/5.
