After his death, it was discovered that Mirra had chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). He had suffered several concussions during his career, and at the age of 19, his skull was fractured when he was struck by a car. Dave was the first action sports star to receive a CTE diagnosis. Mirra's widow has supported numerous charities in Dave's memory, such as the Road 2 Recovery Foundation and CTE research organizations.
