Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Emmanuel Etafia has cautioned Nigerian clubs against getting swept up in the excitement surrounding the revamped 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. He insists they should prioritise solid performances in CAF competitions first.

Set for June–July 2025 in the USA, the expanded tournament will feature 32 clubs four from Africa but Nigerian teams have yet to earn a spot. Qualification depends on accumulated performance metrics from continental tournaments between 2021 and 2024.

Etafia warned that hype without substance could mislead clubs and damage their development. He emphasised that Nigeria’s representatives in CAF competitions are currently underperforming, often exiting early and missing out on lucrative prize money and global attention.

He pointed out that consistent performance in the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup competitions offering as much as US$4 million and US$2 million for winners remains the most realistic pathway to earning one of the African slots for the Club World Cup.

Etafia concluded that investing in continental success now would strengthen Nigerian clubs structurally, improve their global standing, and potentially unlock a place at the Club World Cup in the near future.
