Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Emmanuel Etafia has cautioned Nigerian clubs against getting swept up in the excitement surrounding the revamped 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. He insists they should prioritise solid performances in CAF competitions first.

Set for June–July 2025 in the USA, the expanded tournament will feature 32 clubs four from Africa but Nigerian teams have yet to earn a spot. Qualification depends on accumulated performance metrics from continental tournaments between 2021 and 2024.

Etafia warned that hype without substance could mislead clubs and damage their development. He emphasised that Nigeria’s representatives in CAF competitions are currently underperforming, often exiting early and missing out on lucrative prize money and global attention.

He pointed out that consistent performance in the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup competitions offering as much as US$4 million and US$2 million for winners remains the most realistic pathway to earning one of the African slots for the Club World Cup.

Etafia concluded that investing in continental success now would strengthen Nigerian clubs structurally, improve their global standing, and potentially unlock a place at the Club World Cup in the near future.

Editorial

We agree with Etafia’s perspective: ambition is vital, but foundation comes first. Nigerian clubs need to build consistency continentally before aiming for global stages. Jumping ahead to Club World Cup glory without mastering CAF competitions is premature and potentially counterproductive.

We hold that focusing on the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup where prize money and prestige directly reward success will yield deeper benefits. Excelling here provides not only financial stability, through millions in CAF payouts, but also enhances technical growth and international credibility.

We believe that Nigerian clubs must also tackle structural shortcomings the professionalisation of administration, calendar alignment, and investment in coaching and player welfare, as highlighted by domestic league analys. These reforms are non-negotiable in preparing for both continental and global competition.

By prioritising the development and delivery of CAF performance, not only do clubs create a to the Club World Cup, they also contribute to shaping a more sustainable, competitive Nigerian football ecosystem. That’s how global ambition becomes reality.
