Chicago has been a laboratory of experimental journalism for years. Funding from philanthropy allows reporters to experiment with different methods of news gathering and storytelling.

Philadelphia's rethinking of traditional journalism practices has started an experiment that could have a reverberation across the country. Philadelphia has been a pioneer for finding new ways of collecting and disseminating information about the community while encouraging citizens to engage with local government.

While they earn accolades for their reporting, these young journalists also serve as mentors and foster collaboration across Chicago. Their goal is to rewrite the narrative of Chicago while giving back its stories to its citizens.

The TRiiBE began in February 2017 when three Black Northwestern University grads wanted to change how people viewed their hometown. They also wanted to return the ownership of stories back to local residents. The TRiiBE's goal was empowerment of community members through journalism and giving people the power to tell their stories.

Kalyn Besha and Melissa Sanchez, both education reporters, have been recognized for their work covering the digital divide in chicago news logan square (illinoismail.top) schools. They influenced policymakers and helped improve Chicago’s technology systems. In 2013, they were shortlisted in the Peter Lisagor Award For Excellence in Education reporting.

Sarah Karp, a staff writer for The Chicago Reporter who earned the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism for her series about Chicago's incarcerated youth and their struggles to stay in school, made waves across media platforms when her stories inspired the Illinois Department of Corrections to implement changes that have improved conditions in prison, enabling inmates to re-enroll in high school or find equivalent work once released from imprisonment.

Karp won the Justice Leadership Award for her work on crack babies from Treatment Alternatives for Safe Communities. The organization assists people with mental illness or substance abuse disorders in getting out of jail and receiving community treatment.

Journalism's future is uncertain, given the persistent financial challenges. To support innovation in journalism and not just support one specific model, supporters of journalism should adopt an inclusive plan to encourage all forms of innovation. This involves investing in business operations to lower running costs of newsrooms while creating additional sources of revenue, supporting leadership success through coaching entrepreneurs and executives, incentivizing partnerships that foster quality news coverage across cities, and incentivizing partnerships and collaborations that foster fuller coverage of issues relevant to them.
